Scandinavian Traveler - Joel Kinnaman wearing vintage Rolex

The Craft and Tailored Team was recently presented with the opportunity to work with the uber talented stylist Tara Nichols who was working with Actor Joel Kinnaman. Joel is best known in Sweden for playing the lead role in the Swedish film Easy Money, a role that earned him a Guldbagge Award in the "Best Actor" category, and also for his roles as Frank Wagner in the Johan Falk film series and Governor Will Conway in the U.S. version of House of Cards.

He starred as detective Stephen Holder on AMC’s The Killing, and played Alex Murphy in the 2014 RoboCop remake, and Rick Flag in the film adaptation of Suicide Squad (2016), based on the DC Comics anti-hero team.

Stylist Tara Nichols came to us looking for advice on a vintage timepiece that would suit the classic yet edgy style of Joel Kinnaman’s look for an article and photo shoot with Scandinavian Traveler Magazine. Tara and Cameron Barr the CEO and Founder of Craft & Tailoreddiscussed a range of timepieces that could work well with a more tailored look as well as a casual yet classic masculine style that Joel possesses. We instantly went into the classic and vintage submariner range of watches and ended up deciding that a 1979 Rolex Sea-Dweller Ref 1665 MK 1 variant was going to suit Joel’s style best, and pair well with the items Tara had pulled for Joel’s shoot.

The Rolex SeaDweller Ref. 1665 very much like the Rolex Submariner possesses an iconic, classic, and timeless look that paired will with the style and look that Tara has put together for Joel and his shoot.

Like most of the vintage timepieces we curate in our collection here at Craft & Tailored, the Rolex SeaDweller possesses a history and a vibe that sets itself apart from the average which makes this specific example that Joel was wearing for his shoot even cooler then your typical modern Rolex.

The Rolex SeaDweller was born in the late 1960s out of the collaboration with the French diving company COMEX.  During the 1960s, the needs of professional divers working at great depths led to the development of the first ‘ultra water resistant’ tool watches designed for conducting safe diving operations at 300 m+ (1,000 ft+) depths. Compagnie maritime d’expertises (aka. COMEX). Although the Rolex SeaDweller looks a lot like its little brother the Rolex Submariner, there are some key differences that make the reference unique. These features include a thicker case which incorporates a helium escape valve, a thicker domed crystal without a date magnifier window aka a “cyclops”,  and an increased depth rating of 2000ft/ 610m as apposed to the 660ft/200m depth rating commonly found on other submariners of the same era. We recently showcased a fantastic 1978 Rolex Sea-Dweller Ref 1665 MK1 “Great White”  on the Craft & Tailored YouTube Channel which is the same reference Joel is waring in his shoot. You can find out more about this awesome and unique Rolex reference by chasing out the video from our Youtube channel below and by visiting the timepieces section of Craft & Tailored!

Special thanks to stylist Tara Nichols & Joel Kinnaman for collaborating with Craft & Tailored and for being a pleasure to work with!  You can catch Joel on the Netflix series House of Cards and in the the 2016 Marvel film release of Suicide Squad.
